Trichosanthes dioica- Also known as Potol. More popular in the eastern part of Northern India in states like Bengal, Orissa, Assam, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, this vining plant is dioecious (male and female plants). The female plants will bear the fruits but will require a male plant for fertilization. We sell the plants as pairings of 3 females: 1 male, 6 females: 1 male, and 9 females: 1 male. The green fruit is about four inches long and two inches broad, with creamy flesh and small seeds. More commonly, chunks of the fruit are cooked as curry, stew or soup. As with other gourds, the bland fruit flesh is an ideal base for making sweets. The unripe fruit can be pickled in vinegar.
