Nelumbo is a genus of aquatic plants consistenting of solely two species. Nelumbo nucifera is the species also known as the sacred, or Indian lotus.(Ironically the genus "Lotus" is reserved for a completely unrelated flower). While the lotus is the national flower of India and Vietnam, its flowers can be found throughout much of Asia. Indian Lotus can be grown in water as deep as 8ft and as shallow as 1ft. It is recommended to use shallow water in cooler climates. Different parts of the plant are consumed in different ways throughout Asia. Most noteably the Lotus flower has a significant symbolic importance in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the path to spiritual enlightenment. Whether you are an experienced water gardener, or new to the process, Indian Lotus is a beginner-friendly addition to any home, bringing beauty and serenity right to your garden! (Polianthes tuberosa) has tubular blooms and a fragrance that is described as rich, sultry and seductive. The oils extracted from the flowers are used to make perfume. Bulbs can be planted in spring and will flower in late summer. Plant 2-3 in. deep and 1 foot apart. In USDA zones 8 and above the bulbs may be left in the ground. Everywhere else the bulbs can be dug up in the fall, allowed to air dry for three to five days. and stored in sand or peat moss. It also makes an excellent potted plant and can be kept indoors during the winter. Choose between sets of 2 or sets of 4. Known as Mawal in Kashmiri, Celosia Cristata is believed to be native to India. It is also called Cockscomb, because it looks like the top of a roosters head. It now can be found throughout various parts of Asia. It is believed to have been saved from exctintion due to its eyecatching crested appearance, as well as it religious importance throughout Asia. Mawal is in the same family as Amaranthus, and it shares its same edible and nutritious nature. Cockscomb flower is also famously used in the dish Rogan Josh to imbue the dish with its signature red color. Cockscomb is known to be easy to grow and does well indoors and out. Sesbania grandiflora is a small erect, fast-growing, and sparsely branched tree that reaches 32 feet in height. The flowers, young leaves and tender pods of the white flowered hummingbird tree are edible. All parts of the tree are also utilized for medicine in Southeastern Asia and India including preparations derived from the roots, bark, gum, leaves, flowers, and fruit. The leaves are rich in Vitamin, A, Iron and Calcium. The tree thrives under full exposure to sunshine and is extremely frost sensitive. In Tamil the tree is called Kathurumurunga or akatthi,(Agathi Keerai). In Hindi gaach-munga, in Telugu avisi, in Bengali Bokful, and Hadga Flower in Marathi. These plants typically grow about 3-4 feet tall. They can handle from partial to full sun, and need minimum of 4-6 hours of sunlight, and thrive in full sun conditions. Canna seeds have traditionally been used to make ornamental beads for jewelry. In Indonesia, it i commonly referred to as the prayer bead flower, as its seeds are perfect for Buddhist mala's. The rhizomes contain a sweet tasting edible starch, that now through its commercial cultivation is used to make things from vermicelli, to white wine. As a more recenlt innovation, this starch has been utilized to make biodegradable plastic products.
