Canna seeds have traditionally been used to make ornamental beads for jewelry. In Indonesia, it i commonly referred to as the prayer bead flower, as its seeds are perfect for Buddhist mala's. The rhizomes contain a sweet tasting edible starch, that now through its commercial cultivation is used to make things from vermicelli, to white wine. As a more recenlt innovation, this starch has been utilized to make biodegradable plastic products.
The South Pacific series is characterized by its compact growth habit. Its vigorous, uniform, and heavy branching make this series of Canna stand out from the rest.
