Known as Sarvajjaya in Hindi, Metta Tamara in Telegu, Kele Phool in Kokani, and Kardal in Marathi. Canna's are a beautiful addition to any garden. Canna indica "Tropical-Red" is a versatile hybrid Canna variety that is known to even endure an urban settings. It is known to produce very striking red flowers that can bloom from early summer to early fall. In the right climate, its leaves will stay bright and green all year round and can make an excellent landscaping addition in warmer climates. This variety is known to be a good attractor of hummingbirds as well.
Canna seeds have traditionally been used to make ornamental beads for jewelry. In Indonesia, it is commonly referred to as the prayer bead flower, as its seeds are perfect for Buddhist mala's. The rhizomes contain a sweet tasting edible starch, that now through its commercial cultivation is used to make things from vermicelli, to white wine. As a more recenlt innovation, this starch has been utilized to make biodegradable plastic products.
This plant can be grown outdoors or in a container. It can also be grown in the outside in the summer and then moved to a container for fall/winter care(depending where you live) and re planted outdoors in the spring. These plants prefer full sun and evenly moist(but well draining) soil. Ensure to provide a good draining soil mix to avoid root rot(a good rule of thumb for many tropicals!).
The Canna Tropical series is characterized by its dwarf nature, and daylength-neutrality, allowing you to still see this plants beautiful flowers even in shorter day length zones!
*Canna's can be brought inside during the winter, either as cleaned rhizome or in a pot and replanted out doors the following year.
